Sex Therapist Sees Uptick in Porn Addiction Cases

Sex Therapist Sees Uptick in Porn Addiction Cases

Written on May 5th, 2016 in Stories by Anthony Spencer

One of the things that makes porn addiction so insidious is that many professionals still don’t believe that pornography can be addictive. It’s not like drugs or alcohol where an immediate change can be seen if you take it. But the stories that therapists are hearing from long-term porn users are pushing more research into how internet porn can drive normal people to harmful places.

A New Zealand sex therapist shared her story. Over the past five years, Mary Hodson has noticed a huge increase in the number of patients coming to her for porn addiction problems. When she started her practice only a handful of people had porn addiction. Now it’s around 40% of her patients.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t call it an addiction because, according to her, science hasn’t proven that porn addiction is a classical addiction. She instead calls it “out-of-control sexual behavior”. However, she can’t deny the effects that porn is having on her patient’s lives.

She also worries that the huge increase of patients with porn problems she’s seeing is just the tip of the iceberg. People don’t go to see sex therapists unless the problem has gotten so severe that they seek help. She surmises there must be many more people who have pornography problems, but they may not be serious enough to push them to seek help.
