Teen Porn Usage Leads to Body Image Problems

Teen porn viewing is a concern that many parents have. The availability of high-speed internet porn accessible anywhere poses a different challenge than just hiding a few magazines between the mattresses. It also brings up different problems.

Many people discourage porn use among teens for religious reasons and due to the dangers of making sex seem like a casual activity, which can lead to an increased risk of pregnancy and STDs. But now there is increasing evidence that porn use can damage teens in ways beyond these. It’s influencing teen’s perceptions of what a healthy body is and their expectations for sexual behavior.

An article on Newsweek details some of the findings. One finding is that many teen women who view porn become unhappy about their bodies. Some seek surgery to change their genitals to match what they think is beautiful according to what they’ve seen in porn videos. Another finding is that the more a teen watches porn the more it influences their sexual expectations. Porn is essentially becoming sexual education.

There is also evidence that some teens that watch porn lose interest in real partners or turn toward abnormal sexual responses. The higher the porn usage, the stronger these statistics become. On top of all this, the fears and anxiety about having a poor body image can drive sexually-active teens to riskier behaviors due to decreased sexual satisfaction.

These sorts of issues lead to hard questions for parents and society. It’s a cliché of American culture to fear giving or hearing “the talk”, and with this generation, the talk may have to go much further than what you expect just to keep up with everything that teens learn from porn. Blocking porn usage is a good thing, in our opinion, but for young people, this must be coupled with healthy sex education. Otherwise, teens will get their answers from each other, and from porn. Is that a gamble you’re willing to take?
