Tumblr Into Porn

Tumblr Into Porn

There are many websites out there that contain pornography and other inappropriate material. Sites like Facebook, Reddit, and even YouTube contain some level inappropriate material but one that really stands out is a website called Tumblr.

What is Tumblr?
Tumblr is a social networking and blogging website that allows anyone to create a page for themselves. What sets Tumblr apart from other blog platforms like WordPress and Blogger is the ability for users to “re-blog” at the touch of a button and share images and posts with others on their own page. This means that images and posts can be shared across vast portions of the site and users profiles within minutes.

Who Uses Tumblr?
Tumblr is growing in popularity by leaps and bounds and many of it’s users are young, very young. According to a 2013 Business Insider report, 61% of 13-18 year olds said they use Tumblr and 57% of 19-25 year olds admitted to using Tumblr.

So, why should you be concerned?
Simple, it’s full of porn. In fact, a quick search of the term “porn” on Tumblr generated 18.5 million returns (see for yourself, go to google.com and type in site:tumblr.com porn). That’s an insanely high number of hits from just one search term! It’s easy to see how dangerous this site can be.

Another reason to be concerned is Tumblr’s very on lax policy regarding adult content. Here’s what they have to say about it on their very own FAQ page:

Q) “Is adult-oriented content allowed on Tumblr?”
“Sure. We have no problem with that kind of stuff. Go ****. Show ****. Whatever.”

To me, that doesn’t sound like a company that wants to protect you or your children from inappropriate material at all. They make it easy to Tumblr into porn.

What can you do?
Monitor your users (kids or partners) accountability reports for Tumblr and if you see it, ask them what they looked for, and what they found. Arm yourself with information about social media and take a look at pages like iParent.tv for more resources.
